Zlatko Conkov became the winner of the subsequent tournament of the Dynamic Billard Best of the East 2009 that took place in Bourgas . This victory opened a new chapter in the history of Bulgarian Billiard Union players performance on an international stage. The Best of the East series started 11 years ago and, over the years, never has the Bulgarian player been the winner. Congratulations for the new management of the Bulgarian Billiard Union and also for the Real-Billiard company from Sofia that was the main organising partner for the MAK Marketing at this sporting event.
Silver medal went to Babken Melkonian who repeated his last years performance. Two bronze medals went to polish players: Mariusz Skoneczny and Dominik Zajc.
Just like in previous years play took place in two Bourgas clubs: Target and RSP. In Round Robin matches there were no surprises; out of 64 participants 32 advanced to single knock-out stages. There, in the first round, we unexpectedly saw out Adam Skoneczny who lost to Ben Gmach . In the next round, another player from Israel, Dror Dobronsky sent away European Championships Silver Medalist, Radoslaw Babica, 7-3. On another table Babken Melkonian won over another famous Pole, the winner of Liberec Euro-Tour, Wojciech Trajdos, 7-5.
However, there was another Pole who, at first, played just brilliant Mariusz Skoneczny. He defeated P. Raikov , 7-0; B.Gmach , 7-1; N.Vlashev , 7-0 and with these, he advanced to Quarterfinals. In there, B. Melkonian sent home D. Dobronsky, D.Zajac won over N.Kemielev and well known Christea Ovidiu lost to Zlatko ConkoV, 3-7. Dominik Zajac was the „lucky chap” there for the match with Verbanov he fluked ball 9 to a different pocket, and for the match with Kemieliev – as previously, only with an additional carom.
In Semi-finals the leading players were the Armenian and the Bulgarian; Melkonian defeated Skoneczny, 7-4 and Conkov won over Zajac, 7-4.
For the victory in the Final most bookmakers pointed out the more experienced Melkonian. However, Conkov, warmly and loudly supported by large home crowd, played better and finally won, 7-4.
The total prize money for the Bulgarian Open 2009 was € 4 000. In addition to medallists, there were special prizes: best female player was Rosica Apostolowa and best junior (pupil up to 16 years old) was Radostin Dimov . Altogether in Bourgas we watched players from Poland, Romania, Lebanon, Israel, Armenia, Sweden and Bulgaria.
The Tournament Director was Marcin Krzeminski and the Head Referee was Waldemar Debski . Many thanks for organisational help to George Videnov and Vladimir Popov.
